Thought you had to roll your own smokes to be cool? Think again, you can roll sushi instead.

sushiroller_500x463

If, like most people, you think sushi is to tricky to try at home (it’s not) maybe this sushi roller from the German based design house of Osko+Deichmann may help.  What appears to be a cigarette roller on steroids, this is sure to warm the hearts of both raw fish lovers and fans of Cheech and Chong alike.  According to Juniper at crave this cool sushi device will be shown in June at the Kitchen Ecology Exhibition taking place in Los Angeles.  Hit the link to see the pictorial run down of how it works.

Got the shakes, can’t function? Let the mypressi TWIST give you your fix

ortho

If you are anything like me than I’m sure you are aware that kidnapping a barista is illegal.  It’s also terribly inconvenient to carry around a full blown espresso machine.  With the mypressi TWIST all your legal, and back problems, are over!  To quote mypressi the TWIST “is the world’s first truly portable espresso machine”.  The TWIST will accept either ground coffee or ESE pods with an optional adapter.  Weighing in at only a pound and only 10.5 inches long, you should be able to easily toss this into your backpack for espresso on the go.  The TWIST is simple to use too, simply charge with standard gas cartridges, add ground coffee or an ESE pod, fill the top with hot water, and pull the trigger, 20-30 seconds later you should have the perfect shot.  mypressi states that the cartridge will provide 135psi during the entire shot duration and one cartridge will pull aproximately 8 single shots.  I guess we will find out in the fall when the TWIST goes on sale for $129.00.

What ever happened to Ted Allen?

Alright, so I know where he is, but I got your attention didn’t I?  First things first, I love Ted Allen.  He’s my gay, better dressed Alton Brown.  Did he know what food I wanted to eat in his 2005 book “The Food You want to Eat”? Absolutely!  Between you and me, I’ve been passing off his brilliant  recipe for Duck Breast with Balsamic Glaze from his book, as my own for about 3 years now (Sorry Ted but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery).  His wonderful ability to simplify sumptuous meals for the non foodie to make at home is, in my opinion, in the same vein as was the Playboy Cookbook from the 1960s.  Hit the jump to hear more ranting…

Obsessed with balls

ballwhisk

There it is, the balls that have been on my mind for months.  Don’t ask me why, I just get this way about kitchen gadgets.  I get a particular item stuck in my head and I convince myself that no other tool will work.  Why a ball whisk you ask?  Lets find out.

In search of Bread Pudding

mixed_bread_tresses

One of the most comforting things I can think of on a bad day has got to be bread pudding.  I was first exposed to it as a little girl on my first trip to Europe.  London was as it should be, cold, wet and grey, but there was this little pub we went to for lunch, the Prince Albert (for those laughing, this was 1981, and the only Prince Albert anyone talked about was in a can).  This was where I had my first bread pudding.  I was hooked.  Hit the jump for the recipe and more musings…

Super Fun Happy Slide

HappySomenFamily

Look at them, laughing, joking, having the best time ever, this is a family that will be together forever.  My family never had that kind of fun and more than likely will be splitting up and going our own ways.  Whats the difference between that super happy family and mine?  Simple, we never had the new Bandai Somen Noodle Slide.

It’s all about the foam

foam75-75

See that picture up there?  Thats foam forming baby, simply put a foam is just air trapped in a liquid or a solid.  Why do I mention this?  Because in order to make those rocking squid strawberry ice candies I had to create some squid foam.  What better way to do that than to buy myself a brand new iSi brushed aluminum Dessert Whip whipped cream and dessert maker.  Hit the jump to learn more.

Strawberries and Squid what could go wrong…

squidstrawberries

I like squid, I like whipped cream, and I like strawberries, put them together and how could you not have a winner on your hands.  Easy, my brain tells me that one of these things is not like the other.  Let me back up a little first, I have recently been reading Morimoto: The New Art of Japanese Cooking and in it chef Morimoto (one of my culinary heroes) details the recipe for squid strawberry ice candy.  This sounds interesting I thought, or maybe it was just an excuse to purchase a new gadget (more on this later).  The concept is simple, puree some squid and simple syrup together, load it into a whipped cream maker, surround a strawberry with squid foam and freeze it.  Now here is where it gets difficult, eating it, which goes like this.  Num, Num, Num, mmmm this is sweet and velvety like a frozen whipped cream, oh is that strawberry I taste, how delicio… OH GOD, mouth to brain, come in brain, is that squid?  That’s not right is it?  Brain to mouth, it is squid, how odd someone has gotten squid in my frozen dessert, and this is where your tasting ends.  Sweet and strawberry are but distant memories in your mouth and the taste of squid is moving in.  I do have to say the flavour is not bad, it’s just odd, like wearing a winter jacket with shorts.  Maybe my palate is just to western for such seafood desserts or just maybe squid plus whipped cream maker plus strawberry really does equal frowny face.  Hit the link for what Katt has to say.
