I thought I needed to follow up Mr. Walken with another celebrity cooking video, this time featuring Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan fame. Also know as Raekwon the Chef he prepares a damn fine looking salmon and does so using a rather colorful vernacular. Hit the jump to watch the video (Warning: The video starts off a bit loud).

Now, anyone that knows me is aware that I’m normally not one for alternative energy sources, but when it dove tails with my hatred for AOL CDs, I’m willing to make an exception. It appears that some crafty individual over at instructibles has taken a discarded 62 inch satellite dish, a handful of AOL CDS, and made themselves a solar cooker. Evidently the original model completely covered the dish with CDs, this achieved a temperature of over 800F, not that ideal for cooking duties. Removing some of the CDs the improved model reaches 400F, a much more usable temperature. When not cooking it can easily double as a death ray, raining down sunny doom on your neighbors and advancing your goals of world domination. Obviously not the most practical of outdoor barbeque’s, it none the less shows that when green and cooking come together AOL loses, and that can’t be a bad thing!

So maybe you don’t need to make mochi (glutinous rice pounded into paste) like those fellows up there but a good mortar and pestle is always nice to have. A short while back I was looking to crush some sesame seeds for a Japanese inspired dish I was preparing. In contemplating the proper way to do this I got to thinking about the many choices one is faced with when looking for a mortar and pestle. Take for instance the Japanese “usu” (mortar) in the picture above, used along with a long handled pestle called a “kine” (basically a wood mallet) to pound rice into mochi, this might be a little large for most kitchens. So what is a home cook to do, continue on to find out.

No? Yeah neither do I, I think of Cuisinart the iconic manufacturer of the Food Processor, so prolific in fact was Cuisinart that writer Eva Pomice of Forbes once commented that owning a Cuisinart “was tantamount to wearing a pair of Calvin Klein jeans. You could hardly boast of a gourmet kitchen if you didn’t own one of these.” So why mention Robot Coupe, because I noticed while watching various food shows that professional chefs where referring to food processors as a Robot Coupe (pronouncing it like “robo coup”) very much like people will call facial tissue, Kleenex or cola, Coke. This got me to thinking about how this seemingly obscure company could be the inventor of the food processor? How in the world of professional chefs is the name used in place of the device itself but in the home kitchen Cuisinart is the name of choice? Simple, they are French! I kid, I kid, for the real story of the food processor just hit the jump.

After months of searching over and over for a widgit from Epicurious to come out one is finally here. The application is free and available for download at Apples iTunes Store. Once I finished downloading the program I was eager to check it out. It’s an easy to use interface with 10,000+ recipes, searchable by name or by choosing a chapter like ‘weeknight dinners’ and paging through each recipe one by one. I especially like the chapter’s titles such as ‘I cook like a Pro’ and ‘I can Barely cook’ so you can decide just how involved you really want to be in your kitchen that day. You can search by main ingredient, type of cuisine, dietary consideration, dish type and season, or occasion.
Probing deeper into the app, I’ve found that it is easy to make a shopping list, mark things as favorites, and even email the recipe to an unsuspecting boyfriend as an eHunnyDo. The only thing I have to gripe about, and its my main complaint with all cooking applications and magazines, what’s with all the deserts? There are more than 5,000 deserts and less than 700 weeknight dinners? Ummm, what happened to eat your dinner then you can have a desert.

Have you seen the new Starbucks ad campaign? This has to be the worst one they’ve had to date. Using the tag line ‘Beware of a cheaper cup of coffee. It comes with a price,’ Once again Starbucks is unapologetic about their raping of America with high priced coffee. Selling American’s over roasted coffees on every street corner has allowed the mega brewer to sit back and watch us slowly start to believe bitter is better.
The letter accompanying the new campaign preview was kind enough to remind us that even if your watching your pennies, value doesn’t mean going with a different coffee. Now I indulge in a Venti Vanilla Latte every now and again, but thanks to Starbuck’s continuing compassion for its customers, I’m really going to enjoy my coffee from Dunkin Donuts tomorrow.

If you haven’t recently, take the time to thank a teacher. Or at least check out teachnet.com. They have awesome things to help you remember all kinds of things. With this cool little graphic of Mr. Gallon I’ll never have to rummage around for my grade school Trapper Keeper to know how many cups it takes to make my Koolaid right.
